Public Speaking helps to develop critical thinking skills and improve verbal and nonverbal skills. At St Margaret Mary's College, the importance of the development of these skills is recognised through our engagement with Public Speaking and Debating.
In 2016, our Senior Debate team consisting of Year 11 students won the Townsville Interschool Debating Competition. We are sure that the team will continue to do well this year in their final year of competition. Our 7/8 Debate teams were in record number in 2016 and SMMC 4 made it through to the Finals.
Public Speaking will continue to flourish in 2017 and we will participate in a range of competitions including Lions Youth of the Year, Rostrum and The Laracy Public Speaking Competition. The Laracy Public Speaking competition allows us to compete against Marist College Ashgrove via Skype. This is a wonderful opportunity for our school and always an entertaining afternoon for our speakers. We have proudly help the winning plate for the past three years and look forward to a strong competition in October.
Public Speaking and Debating are important aspects of a wide range of diverse activities that we offer to our students at St Margaret Mary’s College to encourage them to flourish and become life-long learners.
