CAREER DEVELOPMENT @ SMMC

St Margaret Mary's College aims to assist individuals of any year level to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. A personalised approach to Career Counselling is offered to the students of this College. Students may attend face-to-face interviews with the Career Development Co-ordinator. These interviews provide an opportunity to clear any doubts or queries student may have regarding career options and education courses. Students may be inspired and motivated to identify their interests and strengths and empowered to work hard in their studies to achieve their goals and ambitions.

Career Programs

Career Programs at SMMC help develop employment-related skills and understanding of the work environment. As well as these programs, the students are encouraged to participate in Work Experience in Years 10, 11 or 12. Students may also incorporate Vocational Education and Training Courses, TAFE VET in Schools Courses and School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships to provide alternative pathways and career options. As each student is unique, Career advice is tailored to their individual needs throughout their schooling. Students may be interviewed at various occasions for example, Year 10 SET Planning and Year 12 Career Pathway advice or Career Transition planning.

Year 9 Career Education Program

Year 9 Students participate in one lesson of Career Education per week in Semester Two.  Topics covered include: 

• Self-Awareness
• Career Research
• Employability Skills
• Labour Market Trends
• Job Search Strategies
• Job Applications
• Applications for USI and TFN Numbers

Year 10 Career Education Program 

Year 10 Students participate in one lesson of Career Education per week in Semester One.  Topics covered include:

• Senior Schooling Terminology
• Senior Subject Selection
• Pathway Options
• SET Planning
• Review/Update Resumes

Year 11 Career Education Program

Year 11 Students do not participate in formal Career Education lessons, however are encouraged to explore Career Pathways by the following means:

• ACAR/VET/TAFE subjects
• Voluntary Work Experience
• Mandatory Work Placement for VET Certificates
• School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships
• Individual Case Management
• Attending Career Focused Guest Speaker events
• Review of SET Plans

Year 12 Career Education Program

Year 12 Students do not participate in formal Career Education lessons, however are encouraged to explore Career Pathways by the following means:

• Individual Career Guidance
• SET Plan/Senior Review Interviews
• Transition Plans
• QCS Preparation
• Attending University Open Days and Uni Experience Days
• Attending Career Focused Guest Speaker events
• QTAC Applications
• Scholarship investigation & application
• Job Search Strategies and Recruitment methods
