SMMC LEADS THE WAY IN ATAR READINESS

For decades, St Margaret Mary’s College has led the way in the education of young women in Townsville.  Now, as the first cohort of Year 11 students embark on their schooling in the New QCE system, SMMC leads the way in preparing girls for their aspirational Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).

Deputy Principal, Learning and Teaching, Mrs Kath Hunter says that the College has been preparing for years. “We really do feel that we are on the front foot in terms of preparing our staff and students for attaining an excellent ATAR in 2020.”  Mrs Hunter outlines that both herself and Principal, Mrs Kathy Park, have been instrumental in advising schools about key changes through their involvement in the Townsville Catholic Education Senior Years Advisory Committee.  This allowed the two leaders to provide the latest advice to staff, students and parents about the changes and implement school structures which facilitated the changes.

The College has also invested in its own extensive professional development program to ensure smooth implementation of the new and redeveloped syllabuses.  St Margaret Mary’s College staff recognise that all change is occurs in partnership with staff, students and families.  “We recognise that, in order to be successful in school, girls require support both at home and at SMMC.”

Their extensive tutorial program offered to students studying an ATAR pathway is aimed at readiness for retention of information, building of 21st Century skills and preparation for external assessments in Term 4 of 2020. Parent information evenings have kept parents abreast of the changes.  A thorough SET Planning strategy has allowed students to make wise choices for their future.  The College has also engaged educational experts to consult with teachers to identify high-yeild strategies for the students.

St Margaret Mary’s College is the leading the way in the delivery of academically rigorous subjects and preparing students for their journey toward an excellent ATAR result.
